It’s just about time for that great American tradition that comes around every late November. It’s called Thanksgiving, and it’s a time to enjoy a rich meal with friends and with family. While everyone’s minds will be on the food, the adults at the gathering might be considering the wine selection.

This is especially true for those who are hosting or have been invited to an adults only event. It’s very sophisticated for adults to have a few bottles of great wine on hand, along with at least a few celebratory glasses of champagne.

Some might think that selecting great wines for Thanksgiving is a huge challenge because there are so many different palates to try to please. However, while the host of a meal might try to provide a wide variety of food dishes to please everyone, it’s not hard to provide a variety or two of great wines that go perfectly with these types of meals.

It’s probably a great idea for the host of a Thanksgiving meal to provide a variety of both red and white wine. This should generally cover all of the bases, when it comes to pleasing different palates, and when it comes to providing a wine that pairs well with many different tastes.

Here are some suggestions that you might want to use for your upcoming Thanksgiving gathering:

The Whites: You’ll want to select young, lively, fruity wines

A great wine that goes well with just about everything is the classic Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a dry wine, and it goes well with poultry and with vegetables. It’s one of the most popular wines, because with regards to a flavor profile, it’s light, and there’s nothing strong or outstanding about its flavor profile.

Another great wine that would go great with one’s Thanksgiving meal is Pinot Grigio. This is a light and fruity wine that is very refreshing during the summer months. However, it’s refreshing taste and it’s fruity profile can carry over well into a late autumn meal such as Thanksgiving. This is a wine that goes well with meat or with seafood if it’s served at the meal. For example, crawfish and crab dressing is very popular in some regions of the country at Thanksgiving.

There is also the Riesling. This is a German wine that is crisp, with juicy fruity notes. This is a white wine that would go well with sides such as dressing or sweet potatoes.

The Reds: You’ll want a selection that is not too tart or high in tannins

Pinot Noir is the traditional favorite for Thanksgiving with its fruity flavors that show well with turkey and stuffing.

One of the great reds is the Syrah, or Shiraz. This is a full bodied red wine that has notes of berries and spices. Since no Thanksgiving meal would be complete without cranberries, and sweet potatoes flavored with oranges and cinnamon, then this is a wine that would highlight those flavors, and would complement a roast such as a spiral ham, if it’s served.

There is also the Merlot. This is a very rich full bodied wine that brings to mind plums and cherries or blackberries. Because it’s so dark and rich, this is the perfect red wine to serve for a rich end-of-year feast such as Thanksgiving.

Finally, there is the Beaujolais Nouveau. It’s a national celebration in France when the Beaujolais is debuted in late November. This wine is light bodied, and it’s fruity. These descriptions make this wine a refreshing choice when paired with rich Thanksgiving food.

Some people feel that their love of wine warrants starting a collection. While some people are satisfied with keeping a wine rack by the kitchen or in the dinning room, there are those who have extra space in their homes and would love to use this space in order to create a wine cellar.

Having a wine cellar in one’s home allows an enthusiast to protect their wine collection in a manner that their investment deserves. One won’t have to worry about running to the store every time they have a taste for a particular bottle of wine. Enjoying their favorite wine will be as easy as walking a few feet to their wine cellar.

Here are some simple steps to take in order to create a home wine cellar.

You’ll have to select a location that would be suitable for constructing a wine cellar.

Make sure that the space offers a combination of being able to be climate controlled, and has enough ventilation. The space should restrict sunlight as well.

See to it that you educate yourself and follow any construction codes that might be applicable in your state or city. Then, you will have to purchase construction frames. You might want to consult with a knowledgeable construction source that could advice you on building a wine cellar.

Create a vapor barrier. The purpose of the vapor barrier is to keep excess humidity out of your wine cellar. You can do this by wrapping plastic sheeting outside of your cellar walls, and over the ceiling. You’ll next need to insulate the wine cellar. You can use either foam insulation, blown in insulation, or fiber glass insulation. check with a hardware store as to the grade of insulation that would be appropriate for a wine cellar.

You’ll need to select materials to put on the walls. Many people would lean toward wooden plank panels. This is fine, but the wood needs to be rot-resistant. Great types of wood to use that are rot-resistant are red wood, or cedar planks. When you install a floor, carpet is a no-no. Carpet attracts moisture and it will get moldy. You want to go with cement or with tile, marble, slate, or vinyl laminate.

Finally, install your door. When you purchase a door to use, get a door that is used for the exterior of a home. Make sure that you seal your door with weather stripping all around the door. As a finishing touch, you could install a temperature control system. This makes sure that your wine is always at the right storage temperature, and that the humidity is being monitored.

The words ‘Italy’ and ‘wine’ go together in people’s minds first and foremost when people consider a wine producing country. Indeed, wine is not only a product from Italy, but it’s absolutely a part of Italian culture. There isn’t a home that doesn’t have a bottle or a carafe of wine, and even young adults drink table varieties of wine with their meals.

To drink the wines of Italy is to drink a part of history, and to enjoy these wines is akin to capturing the soul of a country.

Italian wine making originated from the Roman Empire colonization of Greek territories. Greeks brought growing grapes for wine, or viticulture, first to Sicily, and then the practice spread further north. During these times, the wine was blended with water in order to make the water bearable to drink. This is thought to be why wine drinking became such a common part of Italian culture.

A classical Italian vineyand scene

Great Italian wines are produced in one of the 20 wine regions in Italy. Many of the wines come from Piedmont and Tuscany. One of the most popular grape varieties that makes white wine is Pinot Grigio. This variety is from the Lombardi region. This variety of grape, also called Pinot Gris when it’s marketed in France, is one of the most popular white wines in the world. It is known for having an extremely light taste, with lots of fruity sweet notes. This is a wonderful wine to enjoy in the hot summer months, and it goes extremely well with seafood, and with chicken. This is a wonderful wine to simply enjoy on its own as well. Sometimes, it is said that the full flavor of the wine doesn’t translate, because it’s produced so quickly.

However, there are vintners who allow the grape to come into full maturity, and the flavors come through. Another grape variety is called Pecorino. Pecorino is truly a white wine, although it is being marketed as a red wine. It’s known for being sharp and acidic. This is a wine that has a bite. This would be great with a hearty meal, such as with seafood, or with a poultry stew.

Sangiovese is a variety that produces many of the popular Italian wines, such as Chianti, and more. This variety is cultivated in the Tuscany region. It’s also used as a base mixture for other wines such as the Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It boast very sweet and fruity notes. It picks up oak notes, and it produces a high alcohol content. The Italians are very adept at selecting wines that pair well with meals, desserts, or as an appetizer. There are certainly enough grape varieties to meet the needs of any wine enthusiast.

Wine Tasting – A Great Way To Learn About Wine

It can be great fun and a rewarding experience to attend wine tasting events. Many people do not go either from fear, or not understanding what goes on at these events. Although there are no big secrets to the wine tasting, you do need to remember some things.

The women get served first, and men get served second, during any wine tasting event. Bottled water can be served between the tastings at some events, and this is to cleanse your palate, so it can be ready for the next wine up for tasting. Hold the glass on the stem, when taking the wine, to keep the heat from your hands from affecting the wine. Crackers and other food will also be available, and these can also cleanse your palate between the various wines.

As you may or may not know, you can learn much about the wine just by its color. When you go to a wine tasting for your first time, you will see that the glasses used are completely clear. This is so you can better examine the wine. White tablecloths should be used on the tables, this also helps you better examine the color of the wine. Do not just do by the wine’s name, this could easily mislead you.

You will see that the more knowledgeable wine tasters will swirl the wine in their glasses, and then taste the wine. This swirling might look funny, but it does bring out the wine’s flavor. Many of the wines age in bottles for a quite a long time, at times many years. The swirling motion in the glass releases the wine’s flavors, and makes it easier to taste them as you drink the wine.

At the events for wine tasting, you examine the wine visually, you smell the aroma of it, you swirl it about in the glass, and then you taste it. Smells are an important part of tasting, because you experience more of the wine by smelling its aroma first. The aroma of wine is quite sensual, and it helps to highlight the flavor that the wine is associated with. After you do smell the aroma of the wine, take a moment or two to enjoy it, and let your mind dwell on this wine.

Now comes in knowing the right way to taste wine. On the front and back on your tongue you have taste buds, these help to identify flavors. Wine has many flavors to it, and the way you go about tasting it will have an impact on the results. After you take a sip of wine, swish it over your tongue for a bit, and that will allow all the flavors enough time to be picked up by your taste buds. Think about the flavors you are able to taste, after the taste buds have had a chance to be exposed to the wine. After you swallow your wine, its aftertaste will stay in your mouth, and provide you with even more characteristics of the flavor and type of the wine.

Before attending any wine tasting, it is wise to learn some facts about a number of different types and flavors of wine. With this knowledge, you will know better what to look for when tasting the wine. Although you might be a novice at the wine tasting, do not ever forgo a chance to be at one of these events. It is an interesting experience to have, and you could even be introduced to some wines yet unknown to you.

You may not realize it, but red wine is considered a healthy drink due to its abundance of antioxidants.

A growing number of scientific findings have shown that red wine has health advantages due to the substantial level of antioxidants called “resveratrol” - a type of polyphenol known as “phytoalexin.” This group of compounds defend themselves against attacks such as stress, accidents, UV exposure and specific illnesses including fungus and infection.

Resveratrol which is found in the seeds and skins of processed and fermented grapes through the process of creating red wine. And, due to the extended fermentation of grapes in red-wine creating, higher levels of resveratrol are produced.

The wonders of red wine

Following are some of the health rewards of red wine consumption:

- Anti-Aging – The high resveratrol content of red wine could prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s illness. Red wine is also considered beneficial in preventing dementia.

- Cancer Prevention – If you are prone to the cancer, reasonable usage of red wine can slow the growth of cancer cells thus preventing the development in the illness.

- Heart Health – Specialists agree that the tannins and flavoniods in red wine can raise the levels of your “good” cholesterol (HDL). Alternatively, the red wine’s antioxidant qualities can reducte the your “bad” cholesterol (LDL). When this occurs, it lessens your probabilities of developing cardiovascular diseases. Red wine also serves as a blood thinner, which can be beneficial in lowering blood pressure.

- Healthy Mouth – The polyphenols found in red wine will minimize the presence of free radicals which trigger the infection and bacteria proliferation within the person’s mouth.

- Health Skin – Again, because of a high amount fo polyphoenols, red wine prevents the damages brought by the cell oxidation processes.

If you haven’t had your first taste of homemade strawberry wine, you’re in for a treat. But, as with all great things, you must wait. Here’s how to make your first batch.

7 pounds fresh fresh really fresh strawberries

2 gallons boiling purified or natural spring water

1 lemon – juice only

after one week you’ll need to add

5 pounds sugar

Wash and hull the strawberries, then mash in a large earthenware bowl. Pour in the boiling water, add the lemon juice and stir continuously for two minutes. Cover this with a linen cloth. Place in a cool dark place. Stir each day for one week.

On day eight, strain your mixture through a double layer of cheesecloth into a large bowl, discarding the pulp and remaining residue. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Pour back into the newly cleaned earthenware bowl and repeat the daily stir for another week.

Now that the second week is over, it’s time to brew. Pour the strawberry liquid into one gallon glass jugs and loosely cork. Now let the magic begin. Store in a cool dark place for three months. At this time the wine should be finished with the fermentation process. (It will no longer be bubbling).

Pour the clear wine into individual bottles, cork and let age for a year or more before drinking this marvelous strawberry wine.

It is very important how wine is stored. When stored right it can taste heavenly, however, when it is stored wrong you get unfavorable results. When you open a bottle of you wine that has been stored properly, it will be an enjoyable event. The same is not true when you open a badly stored bottle of wine. Wine stored incorrectly can taste like vinegar.

To correctly store your wine, you will have to make sure of some things. The temperature, humidity, cleanliness, lighting of the area you have chosen for storage, what angle the bottle sits at, and how much the bottle vibrates in the rack are all important factors.

The correct humidity level for wine storage is about 70%, however, a level within 10% either up or down is permissible. If the humidity is too high, the labels can mold or rot easily and this will lower the value of the wine.

The angle at which the wine is stored is equally as important. The cork will not dry out, when the wine stays in contact with it during storage. If the cork is allowed to dry out, it will let air get to the wine. The wine should not be exposed to light either, because this can ruin the wine. Light makes the wine age too quickly, so your storage area for it should be in a dark area of your house or building.

To keep the wine from damage because of sediment, you need to store it in a place where it will not be vibrated. When the wine is not subjected to vibration, the sediment will settle to the bottom of the bottle. The vibrating is just not good for the wine, it makes the sediment stay up in the wine and it will ruin the wine. It will also adversely affect the how the wine tastes.

To safeguard your investment and quality of the wine, care and storage is extremely important. In wine collecting, there is nothing worse than waiting for many years for your wine to age just right, only to discover is taste like vinegar. Taking proper care of your wine, will keep this from occurring. Wine is not that difficult to store or care for, you just need the right location and conditions.

Even though positioning of the wine is of importance in storing it, the temperature of the wine is the most important factor in storing it above everything. The storage temperature of your wine is crucial. It impacts the flavor, longevity, and quality of your wine. Many of the wines have to stay in storage for long amounts of time. This is why the temperature is of such importance.

The temperature of the wine storage needs to be constantly at about 50 to 65 degrees F. When wine is kept in this temperature range, it will age in the right manner. Before there was refrigeration, the wine was kept in caves or underground cellars. As the refrigeration was invented, it became the preferred and easiest method for wine storage, because it helps to maintain the right temperature.

Wined Up -
Conceived by architect Jan Valgora to feature a floating 3,000 bottle-one hundred foot wall of wine, Wined Up is a beautiful, seductive spot to visit to sample different wines from all over the world collected by Sommelier Joshua Hakimi and the delightfully eclectic small plate menu created by Chef Matt Corbett. 913 Broadway, New York City.

If wine is placed in a hot place or in direct sunlight for storage, this will cause the temperature to increase, when this occurs, the wine’s quality and flavor can be damaged. When the wine is damaged, because of heat, it typically turns brown by going through oxidation.

When the temperatures are too cold they could make the wine age slower, this could also prevent some necessary chemical reactions from occurring. The taste or quality of the wine might not be affected, but the colder temperatures are not recommended. Any of the bottles of wine, should stay stored in temperatures higher than 50 degrees F, until you are ready to open them. This will make sure the wine is at the right temperature storage wise, and this will enable it to have the necessary chemical reactions to age.

After opening the bottles keep them refrigerated, at a temperature of 41 degrees F. When you the information above for storing wine, you will find that the wine tastes fantastic. Storing your wine correctly will not only add to how it tastes, but also to its value.

When any conversations or thoughts on wine come up, you might find yourself wondering about where the wine is made. If you research into what the name of a wine, as in Champagne or Burgundy, you will find where the wine originated. Burgundy is not only a well-known wine from France, it is also a region in this country. There is a variety of wines on the market today. Many of them are made in France.

In the past, the peasants in France made the wine and only used it for their own pleasure. Wine dates way back in France’s history, so it is not shocking that French wine is among the world’s best wines. The wines made in the new world have their ingredients included on the label, while old-world wines from France have the location they were made in printed on their labels. The French winemakers, by printing the labels this way, add a touch of romance for you to each bottle of their wine.

Many of the wine lovers worldwide believe the French wine is the best. They prefer to drink it over other wines. There are various types of French wine on the market, providing you a number of choices. With this, you are able to enjoy and compare their textures, aromas, and flavors.

With France having thirteen separate regions, which contain thousands of the vineyards for wine production, the possibilities are endless for making French wine. France is known to be the perfect location to grow grapes, because of the ideal soil conditions and the vineyards being close enough to water. The climate in this country is also ideal year round, making this country among the world’s best locations for wine.

The French wine ranges from some popular kinds that can be purchased most anywhere that sells wine, to the rarer types, which are quite difficult to locate. When you are in search for these rarer kinds of French wine, you will have the best luck on the Internet. Thousands of various kinds of wine can be found and this includes the rarer types of French wine. The rarer vintage French wine is also very difficult to locate, even on the Internet. Check with the wine forums as you are searching online, this is in addition to the wine websites.

All things considered, French wine definitely is distinct among the rest of the wines. Even though some of the other wines might be made with the same production methods and ingredients, they do not have the same flavor as the ones made in France. You will know the difference immediately upon tasting the wine from France. Some might prefer other wines, but French wine has its own unique aroma and flavor, unlike any other wine. The wine from France is quality all the way, and a flavor you will always remember.

Wine is a beverage that is well-known and loved. It is made from grapes, berries and other fruit by drying them and letting them ferment. When the fruits ferment, the sugar in them transforms into alcohol. The wine has a different taste, aroma, and color based on which fruit has been used to make it.

Wine is classified into three basic categories, which are table, sparkling and fortified. The table wine is a wine that is in its natural state. This differs from other types of wine. A sparkling wine has a certain level of C02. The fortified wine has its alcohol enriched with a touch of brandy.

Typically, the preferred fruits for wine making are grapes. These contain equal quantities of sugar and acid. This is unique to the grapes, and does not occur in other fruits. A high degree of heat has to be used to dry grapes. For grapes to be used for winemaking, you have to understand when they get harvested. If they are not picked at just when the time is right, your wine will not have the right level of sugar and the acid level will be too low.

At the start of the process for wine making, the fruit or grapes get crushed using a large cylinder-shaped container. It will press the fruit’s fleshy parts extracting the juice into big bags, which are connected to this machine. Then these fleshy parts are fermented using heat. While this is going on, yeast that is already present will help turn any sugar into alcohol. When the sugar does turn into alcohol, a buttery flavor will develop in the wine.

Settling happens next. Settling is when types of material or yeast particles float near the surface of the wine. When these reach the surface, the wine gets filtered to remove them. Aging follows this step. This is when the wine is special containers, which will not allow any air to get in, and this process is done for at least a number of months if not for years. When the wine is aged enough, it then gets bottled for shipment and sale.

The wine is bottled in a way where it can be easily identified, and stand out from other kinds of wine. Colored bottles are better to use for this process, because they cut down on the damage caused from oxidation and other issues. Labels are also applied to the bottles with the brand and manufacturer on them, which also makes it a lot simpler for you to choose the wine that you have an interest in.

After you have purchased a bottle of wine, it needs to be stored under the proper conditions. Many times a basement is an ideal place to have your wine storage. You could also have an underground cellar, or any other cool and damp area for wine storage. Regardless of where your wine storage is located, you need to make certain the temperature is maintained at about 55 degrees F all the time.

Wine should never be stored in a location that has a fluctuating temperature, because this could hurt the quality of the wine. The level of humidity should be kept about 60%, this helps keep moisture in the cork. When the temperature gets too cold, it could also hurt the wine. After purchasing your selection of wine, you always need to make sure you place it in the right storage area. When wine is correctly cared for and stored properly, it can have an amazing flavor when you drink it. This makes all your effort and time well worthwhile.

Collecting wine is a very enjoyable and fascinating hobby. This is especially true when you are searching for the wine. When you are considering collecting wine, you need to realize that you could spend a bit more money than you anticipated. Even though wine collecting is a fun hobby, it is can also be quite pricy. If you happen to be new to this hobby, there are some tips listed below to help you get off to a good start.

First, you need to have a place for wine storage. This can be done in your house. However, you will need to have enough space, and the temperature there will need to be cool (50 to 65 degrees F). You should figure out which brands and kinds of wine that you wish to collect. There are many types from which to make your selection. They range from white to red wine. You should also locate some reputable places to purchase your high-quality wine.

There are tasting events you can participate in, as well as trade shows. This is a great way to meet others interesting in wine collecting, and to meet some local traders. You need to try to learn all you can about wine. This can be done through reading newsletters, magazines or referring to websites based on wine. You will be able this way to learn a lot about purchasing, storing, and cooling wine.

To make better preparations for storing your wine, try tasting various types of wines. This will show you the wines that need more aging. It is also a way to educate yourself on the wines more, as in how to differentiate tastes. You need to also know how to spot various flavors. Between the quickly-made wines and the rare-vintage wines, there is a big difference in flavors.

When you first start collecting wine, you need to stay away from buying in large quantities, until you understand exactly which kinds of wine you want in your collection. You need to inform the wine trader that you are a collector. With this information, he can tell you which of the wines you want to collect that he has in stock. Even the wines you collect from other regions, he might be able to provide you with contacts for buying them.

Remember, wine collecting does not have to be just a hobby. It can also be a business venture. You should go to tasting events and wine shows to find out more information about the various brand names, and to also discover the wines that will make the most profit for you. After you have added some rare wines, you might realize more sales and see an increase in your profits.
